CMA and CFM Program Information

The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a globally recognized certification for management accountants. The designation of CMA identifies members as highly qualified professionals in the financial and accounting field. The program and certification is meant to foster the development of those finance and management accounting professionals, so that they can anticipate the needs of their organizations and be integral in the decision-making process.

The Certified in Financial Management (CFM) program has been designed to recognize the unique qualifications and expertise of those professionals engaged in financial management. The CFM designation is intended to provide distinction in today's economic climate and affords the opportunity to certify your proficiency in the business areas that are critical to the decision-making process and the field of financial management.

Achieving the CFM designation demonstrates that you possess mastery of the skills and knowledge necessary to be an influential member of your company's management team. Regardless of where you are in you career or the size of your company, the CFM provides an added dimension to your professional development.

CMA & CFM Examinations

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) established the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) in 1972 to implement and administer the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) program. The ICMA evaluates the credentials, administers the examination, grants certificates and ensures that CMA's and CFM's continue to meet the professional requirements necessary to retain their certificates in good standing. The ICMA is governed by the ICMA Board of Regents. The Board members are appointed by the president of the IMA for three-year terms, with one-third of the members appointed each year. The ICMA staff plans and implements the ICMA activities within the framework of policies and procedures established by the ICMA Board of Regents.

In the future, all ICMA certification exams will be given in a computer-based format through Sylvan Technology Centers. Candidates will be authorized for an examination by the ICMA and will then schedule the exam at a Sylvan Technology Center through their national registry. Part 2CFM, Corporate Financial Management, is currently available in this format, and can be taken six days a week throughout the year at the candidates convenience.
